Business travelers often find themselves in unfamiliar territory, in which case the guidance of a GPS unit can be invaluable. GPS devices, however, are only as reliable as the data stored on them, so they should be updated regularly. Magellan GPS units can be updated through the use of a free software program available on the Magellan website. Some of the Magellan software updates and minor map upgrades can be obtained for free, but most of the map updates must be purchased.

Download and install Content Manager from the Magellan website (see Resources).

Launch Content Manager and log in using your Magellan account information. If you don't have a Magellan account, visit the main page of the Magellan website, click 'Create Account' and follow the directions on the screen to set one up.

Connect the GPS unit to a computer with a USB cable. The unit should turn on automatically. If it does not, turn it on manually.

Right-click the Content Manager icon in the system tray in Windows and the Dock in OS X. Select 'Check for Updates Now.' If any map or software updates are available for download, a notice will pop up on the screen.

Click 'Get Now' to download and install all available updates onto the GPS. When the installation is complete, you will be prompted to disconnect the device.

Click the 'Maps' tab on the main page of the Magellan website.

Select a map upgrade and follow the directions on the screen to complete the purchase.

Launch Content Manager and connect the GPS unit to the computer.
5.
Right-click the Content Manager icon and select 'Sync Purchase Features / Content.' Wait for the update to download and install before disconnecting the GPS.
